The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) will suspend its protest activities across the country until Diwali, its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, has announced, appealing to young supporters to use the festive period to reconnect with their families and celebrate the occasion in peace.
The decision comes amid a series of youth-led protests demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Dipke said the demonstrations had caused considerable anxiety among the families of those participating in the agitation.
He said his own family, along with those of party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh, who are currently in judicial custody, shared these concerns. Urging supporters to be mindful of the emotional toll on their loved ones, he called for a pause in protest activities until the festival.
Meanwhile, the Ramlila celebrations in the national capital have acquired an unusual addition this year, with a 30-foot cockroach effigy set to be burnt alongside the traditional effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Indrajit at Ramlila Maidan.
The Ramlila Committee said the effigy symbolised dirt and unhygienic conditions and that its burning was part of initiatives associated with the Swachh Bharat and Swachh Delhi campaigns.
Responding to the development, Mr. Dipke thanked the organisers for what he described as providing his party with “free publicity”.
The announcement of a temporary suspension of protests comes as the campaign seeking the CEC’s resignation continues to draw attention. The cockroach effigy has also added an unconventional dimension to this year’s Dussehra celebrations in Delhi.
