Indian Railways recorded a 9% year-on-year growth in freight loading during July 2026, transporting over 141 million tonnes, while passenger traffic and freight revenue also registered healthy gains.

New Delhi: Indian Railways continued its strong operational performance in July 2026, registering significant growth in freight loading, passenger traffic and freight revenue, reinforcing its crucial role in supporting India's economic growth and logistics network.
According to the Ministry of Railways, freight loading reached 141.3 million tonnes during July 2026, compared to 129.7 million tonnes in July 2025, registering a 9% year-on-year growth.
The growth reflects sustained demand from key sectors of the economy and continued improvements in freight logistics and operational efficiency.
Several major commodities registered robust year-on-year growth during the month.
To meet rising electricity demand, Indian Railways also increased the supply of domestic coal to thermal power plants by 20% compared to July last year, strengthening the country's energy security.
Higher freight movement translated into stronger earnings, with Indian Railways generating an additional Rs. 1,137 crore in freight revenue over July 2025, reflecting an 8% growth.
Among the railway zones, East Central Railway and Eastern Railway each recorded 33% growth in freight revenue, followed by West Central Railway (23%) and South Eastern Railway (10.33%).
Passenger traffic also witnessed steady growth during July 2026.
Indian Railways carried 63.35 crore passengers, up from 62.19 crore during the corresponding month last year, indicating increased reliance on rail transport across both suburban and non-suburban services.
The Ministry of Railways said Indian Railways remains committed to strengthening freight logistics, improving passenger services and expanding modern railway infrastructure.
Through continued investments in capacity augmentation, operational efficiency and customer-focused initiatives, Indian Railways aims to further support India's economic development, energy security and seamless mobility.
